Koppitsch: Alex and Maria’s wines from the shores of Neusiedler See

How the connection began
We first met Alex and Maria Koppitsch at the Karakterre wine fair in Vienna. It was busy enough to make conversation difficult, but a recommendation from Zsolt Sütő of Strekov 1075 brought us to their wines. Their freshness and sense of the windy shores of Neusiedler See made an immediate impression.
A visit followed. Tasting together in Neusiedl am See gave us a clearer picture of a family whose wines were closely connected to the place where they lived and worked. That meeting became the beginning of our collaboration.
Family work beside the lake
Alex and Maria took over 5.5 hectares from Alex’s father in 2011. In the newsletter’s account of the estate, Alex worked in the vineyards with help from his father, Leo, while Maria handled communications alongside family life.
The lake’s influence, the wind and the local mix of sand, clay, loam and gravel all formed part of the story. Biodynamic principles supported their wider view of farming: the vineyard was one part of a living landscape.

A cellar approach with room for character
The January 2021 release described spontaneous fermentations without temperature control, maturation without sulphur, and bottling without fining or filtration. Different vessels and lengths of skin contact allowed the wines to take different shapes.
Alongside a Zweigelt and St. Laurent red, the newsletter explored an orange wine based on Welschriesling and a field blend, and the Perspektive wines. Those examples showed the breadth of the estate: brightness and drinkability alongside texture and a closer focus on particular soils.
