SZieGL

HAJÓS-BAJA | HUNGARY

Sziegl Pince began with a simple belief: that the future of Hungarian wine lies in rediscovering its roots.

In 2012, Petra and Balázs Sziegl — young, wine-obsessed and freshly graduated — received a small vineyard parcel and a borrowed barrel. What started as an experiment quickly became a calling. Today, they farm nine hectares around Hajós-Baja, working organically and entirely by hand, guided by a desire to preserve old vines and local varieties.

Balázs, trained in viticulture with a deep focus on Kadarka, leads the vineyards; Petra, a winemaker by training, shapes the wines in the cellar. Together, they follow a minimal-intervention approach — spontaneous fermentations, no additives, no filtration — allowing each wine to speak clearly of its origin.

Their wines are rooted in tradition yet quietly progressive, offering a pure, honest expression of place — clean, elegant and refined — with a focus on Hungarian varieties like Kadarka, Olaszrizling, Kékfrankos, and Kövidinka.

A powerful yet finely chiselled expression of Somló’s basalt heart. The nose opens with crushed stone, lemon peel and green pear, layered with subtle smoke and a hint of chamomile. On the palate, it is structured and nuanced — firm acidity wrapped around a dense mineral core. Saline, precise and quietly intense, the fruit remains focused and restrained, unfolding slowly with air. The long lees ageing brings texture without weight, giving breadth to its volcanic tension. This Furmint is a wine built to evolve, revealing deeper layers over time.

More aromatic and gently expansive, this Hárslevelű captures the floral soul of Somló. White blossom, acacia and ripe orchard fruit rise from the glass, followed by subtle spice and a touch of herbal lift. The palate is layered yet composed — textured and rounded, but anchored by vibrant acidity and a distinct volcanic line. A small portion of skin contact adds quiet grip and depth, enhancing both complexity and length. Floral, mineral and finely balanced, this is a luminous expression of the variety.
